Zero30 is
already underway

We’re not waiting until 2030 to get started–we’ve already launched a number of exciting projects and programs to get us there.

Burchill Wind Energy

The turbines on Saint John’s first wind energy project started to turn in June 2023, signaling a new era of clean, reliable energy at stable rates.

New Brunswick’s electricity supply is already one of the cleanest in the world, with 80 per cent of our supply coming from emissions-free sources such as hydro, nuclear, and wind. Burchill adds up to 15 per cent more, leaving a gap of just five per cent—plus additional future demand—to close between now and 2030.

Innovating for our local economy

With the advent of Burchill, we’ve been able to bring renewable energy certificates to Saint John. The certificates help energy buyers reach net zero.

Greening our grid

43,680 annual reduction in tonnes of CO2 emissions; equivalent to taking 13,382 cars off the road

10 Turbines

42 Megawatts of power at maximum output

15% of Saint John’s electricity can be supplied by Burchill

Future-ready: our smart grid

Our award-winning smart grid makes our system more modern, resilient and efficient. It uses digital technology and data to predict energy demand so we can generate, store, and distribute power more efficiently, improve reliability, and reduce outages. And it prepares us for a future where more people rely more on electricity to meet their clean energy needs.

The smart grid connects to a variety of residential and large-scale equipment and devices to optimize energy use, including:

  • Energy storage: utility-scale and residential-scale batteries, electric vehicles

  • Thermal storage devices: hot water tanks, thermal storage heat pumps

  • Load control elements: baseboard heaters, heat pumps, standby generators

  • Other Distributed Energy Resources (DERs): Diesel generators, Burchill Wind Project, solar generation

Tesla Megapack

Energy storage is a critical element of our green energy future, and we are thinking big on this front. In 2019, Saint John Energy was proud to be the first in the world to deploy a Tesla Megapack. Since then, we’ve added three new, bigger Tesla Megapacks, each with 1.5 times the original's storage capacity and energy output.

These utility-scale batteries allow us to store renewable energy, like wind from the Burchill project, and curb peak energy to reduce reliance on combustion-fueled power plants to meet peak demand.

OSO Smart Water Heaters

We love to help our customers go green, and smart appliances are part of the solution. OSO smart water heaters are super-efficient and equipped with the latest smart technology to keep your water at the optimum temperature while allowing us to manage energy usage.

Heat Pump Rental Program

Heat pumps are about three times more efficient than baseboard electric, making them a cost-effective and environmentally friendly way to heat and cool your home. We’ve got a rental program that makes it easy and affordable to get yours today.

E-Bike Financing Program

E-bikes are a clean, green way to get around, but price can be a barrier. Our financing program makes it easy for more customers to switch to this healthy, non-polluting option. It’s all part of leading the change for our customers and the planet

Energy efficiency & conservation

There are lots of little things homeowners and businesses can do that have a big impact on energy consumption. Saint John Energy is helping our customers do the right thing by providing free energy assessments, tips on saving energy, and our award-winning Shave The Peak program that saves money and reduces emissions.
