Ensuring a Sustainable Future

We must maintain our legacy business for customers who need it — a service we have provided for over a century — but, to ensure we can do so sustainably and with strength, we must also ready ourselves for the future.

A Path to Growth

With technological change and societal expectations upending the long-standing business model for utilities, new executive leadership at Saint John Energy began in 2012 to strategically reposition the company to meet these challenges, while still maintaining the traditional services and benefits provided to our community.

This growth strategy document outlines the various initiatives we have undertaken or plan to undertake to ensure Saint John Energy remains a robust utility focused on serving the needs of its customers and contributing to the prosperity of Saint John and New Brunswick.

  • RENEWABLE GENERATION AND STORAGE

  • SMART ENERGY SERVICES FOR CONSUMERS

  • STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

  • A NEW STRUCTURE FOR A NEW ERA

More value for our customers, our city, and our province.

LOW RATES & LONG-TERM RETURN:

  • As a community-owned asset, our growth strategy includes the ability for Saint John Energy to flow regular payments to the City in the form of a dividend while still maintaining our lower rate structure.

  • For the first year it is estimated we could flow payments of $500,000, and in 10 years, up to $7 million each year - while keeping the lowest rates in eastern Canada.

What’s next:

  • We are working with our province to secure necessary legislative changes to modernize our corporate structure that will align Saint John Energy with more than 90 per cent of municipal utilities in Canada.

Why is this important:

  • It will allow us to grow our impact on the economy up to $1.4 billion.

  • It will help us bring cleaner and more renewable energy options to our city and offer customers more smart energy products.

  • It will spawn an entrepreneurial ecosystem around future solutions to energy needs and challenges that will create new jobs and prosperity for our city and the region.

  • It will help Saint John position itself as a national and international hub for smart grid development.
