An explanation from the US EPA: “RECs are the currency of the renewable energy market”

We’re advancing a new era of green energy in New Brunswick with a new offering: Renewable Energy Certificates.

We’re delighted to be able to harness the renewable energy from Burchill wind farm to help Saint John achieve net zero.

Known as RECs, the internationally recognized certificates help energy buyers achieve net-zero goals by certifying that they are buying electricity from a renewable source.

There is a tremendous demand for Renewable Energy Certificates worldwide, and we’re excited to be able to offer this option to those in our community who are looking for the assurance that they are powered by 100 per cent renewable electricity.

With the Burchill Wind Project coming online by the end of 2022, we will have enough green electricity to offer up to 150,000 RECs a year.

Saint John Energy and the City of Saint John will benefit by using some of those RECs to immediately become net-zero for their corporate electricity use.

Saint John itself will benefit too – with an abundant supply of renewable energy coming from Burchill and the RECs that come with it, others will be able to purchase the certificates to help them reach their net-zero goals.

Saint John Energy is focused as much as possible in supporting the local market for RECs, ensuring that the money devoted to purchasing them stays in our community to keep energy rates stable and foster the development of even more renewable energy.

Helping the community transition confidently to a clean energy future helps not only Saint John – it helps our province and our planet too.
